{About} │ COMPUZZLE combines the favorite pastime of crossword puzzle
{COMPUZZLE} │ playing with the color graphics and fun of a computer game.
│ Challenging top quality puzzles coupled with a unique
│ numberless design elevate this ancient 2000+ year old game to
│ a new level of enjoyment. The appropriate across and down
│ word clues, which are determined by the cursor position on
│ the puzzle, are automatically displayed. This eliminates
│ the tedious correlation of clue numbers to puzzle position
│ numbers.
│
│ COMPUZZLE will run on any IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or compatible
│ personal computers and supports VGA,EGA,CGA,MDA, and
│ herculeas video cards.
│
│ Other features include:
│
│ * Two puzzle sizes - 15 by 15 and 21 by 21.
│
│ * Puzzle words can be optionally verified for accuracy on
│ letter by letter basis or at the entire puzzle level.
│
│ * Working puzzles can be saved and restored for play at a
│ later time.
│
│ * Choice of two fonts on the VGA and EGA video adapters.
│
│ * Switching to across or down mode allow the backspace, home
│ end, insert, and arrow keys to function horizontally when
│ entering an across word and veritcally when in down mode.
│

│ Software, all rights reserved,
│
{Beginning} │ 1. Turn on the computer and allow DOS to boot.
{the Game} │ 2. Insert the COMPUZZLE disk in a diskette drive.
│ Change the DOS prompt to the letter of the diskette drive
│ which contains the COMPUZZLE game diskette and type CP.
│
{Main Menu} │ When the game is initially started the Main Menu will
│ be displayed following the logo screen.
│
│ Menu selections from the Main Menu and any of the other
│ COMPUZZLE menus can be made in one of three ways:
│
│ a. Manuever the arrow keys until the characters in the
│ desired selection line turn red.
│
│ b. Type the number which corresponds to the desired menu
│ selection.
│
│ c. Type the letter highlighted in red on the line
│ corresponding to the desired menu selection.
│
│ You can exit any menu without making a selection by simply
│ pressing the Esc key.
│
│
{Main Menu} │ 1. Choose a Puzzle:
{Selections} │ Displays a second menu consisting of all puzzle titles
│ available for play on the current diskette of COMPUZZLE.
│ Choose a selection from this menu to display the
│ selected puzzle ready for play.
│ If you choose a Puzzle which was previously saved by you
│ (as designated by your initials) the partially completed
│ puzzle is resumed at the point at which it was saved.
│
│ 2. Saved Puzzles Only:
│ Displays a menu consisting of ONLY those puzzle titles
│ previously saved by the current player. The current player
│ is designated by three initials as described below.
│
│ 3. Player Initials:
│ Enter your three initials to be used when saving and
│ restoring unfinished puzzles.
│
│ 4. Instructions:
│ Displays a menu of Game instruction topics to be used
│ like a table of contents. Choose a topic to display the
│ the desired instructions concerning the selected topic.
│
│ 5. Order More COMPUZZLEs:
│ Displays and optionally prints an order form used to
│ order the next Volume of COMPUZZLE. If you don't have a
│ printer and would like to order, simply copy the
│ information from this screen and follow the instructions
│ provided.
│
│ 6. Exit:
│ Choose this option to end game and return to the DOS
│ prompt.
│
{Working a} │ Working a puzzle is much like working the usual paper based
{Puzzle} │ puzzle except that COMPUZZLE displays two clues at a time:
│ the across and down word clues which correspond to the across
│ and down word boxes of the puzzle where the cursor is
│ currently located. The clues change automatically as the
│ cursor is moved to desired puzzle locations by pressing the
│ HOME, END, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, and arrow keys.
│ The across and down word boxes that intersect with the cursor
│ are also highlighted in different and distinct colors and
│ the clues associated with the highlighted word boxes are
│ displayed in corresponding colors at the bottom of the
│ screen.
│
{ACROSS and} │ When in horizontal (across) mode, the cursor moves right to
{DOWN playing}│ the next puzzle box (except on the last letter of a word)
{modes} │ as characters are typed. Likewise, in vertical (down) mode
│ the cursor moves down as characters are entered. The modes
│ can be toggled back and forth between the ACROSS and DOWN
│ modes using the F2 key.
│ The current mode is indicated on the function key display
│ line at the top of the screen. Additionally, the clue
│ associated with the the current mode is highlighted in bright
│ white.
│
│
{Saving and} │ A Puzzle can be saved by pressing the F3 key. Each puzzle
{Restoring} │ saved is linked to you by your three initials. For this
{Partially} │ reason its important to be consistent with the initials you
{Completed} │ use. If you have not entered your initials you will be
{Puzzles} │ prompted to do so at this time.
│ A partially completed puzzle will be automatically resumed
│ at the point at which it was saved. This is done regardless
│ of whether you chose the puzzle from the "Chose a Puzzle"
│ or "Saved Puzzles Only" main menu selections.
│
{Function} │ While working a puzzle, functions are described, along with
{Keys} │ the function key that executes them, on the second line of
│ from the top of the screen.
│
│
{F1} │ Invokes the Help menu that contains a number of help
│ topics to choose from.
│
{F2} │ Alternates between ACROSS and DOWN modes and the mode is
│ indicated on the function key display line at the top of the
│ screen. The down mode provides automatic cursor movement
│ down to the next puzzle box while typing characters. The
│ across mode provides normal cursor movement from right to
│ left as characters are keyed.
│
{F3} │ Saves the current puzzle on the screen for later play.
│ A saved puzzle is associated to you by your three initials.
│ If you have not entered your three initials, you will be
│ prompted to do so before the puzzle is saved.
│
{F4} │ Displays a menu of COMPUZZLE options:
│
│ 1. Change Letter Style:
│ This option will toggle an alternative font for puzzle
│ words if you have an EGA or VGA video monitor.
│
│ 2. Display All Answers:
│ Fills in the entire puzzle with the correct words. If you
│ have partially completed the puzzle before choosing this
│ option COMPUZZLE will ask you if you want to save the
│ the partially completed puzzle prior to displaying the
│ correct answers.
│
│ 3. Display Word:
│ Displays the current word (the word in which the cursor is
│ located). While in the across mode as indicated on the
│ function key display line, the across word is displayed.
│ Likewise in down mode, the current down word is displayed.
│
│ 4. Verify Completed Puzzle:
│ When the puzzle is finished, this option will verify the
│ puzzle for correctness. Incorrect letters will be high-
│ lighted in red. If all the words on the puzzle are correct
│ COMPUZZLE will display the message: "All Right, You did
│ it!"
│
{F5} │ Toggles the letter verification feature on or off. The
│ characters entered can be optionally verified for
│ correctness. An incorrect letter pressed while this feature
│ is ON causes the letter to be displayed RED accompanied by a
│ beeping sound to indicate the letter is not correct.
│
{Esc} │ The Esc key is used to return to the main menu. If a puzzle
│ was partially completed COMPUZZLE will ask if you would like
│ to save the puzzle prior to returning to the Main Menu.
│
{Cursor Keys} │ The cursor manipulation keys are for the most part intuitive,
│ but we shall explain them for clarity sake:
│
{Arrow} │ The left, right, up, and down arrow keys move the cursor in
{keys} │ the direction specified by the key pressed. The cursor will
│ always skip a blank square and cannot be positioned outside
│ the puzzle boundries. When the cursor reachs a boundry it
│ wraps around to the opposite side of the puzzle.
│ For example, if the cursor is at the last box on the right
│ side of a puzzle in row one, pressing the right arrow key
│ will position the cursor to the first box on the left on row
│ two.
│
│
{Insert } │ Inserts characters where the cursor is located and existing
{key} │ letters in the current word are shifted one position to the
│ right. In down mode, the existing letters in the word will be
│ shifted one position down. Letters will never shift to a
│ blank puzzle square nor outside of the puzzle boundry.
{Delete} │
{key} │ Deletes a character where the cursor is located and existing
│ letters in the word are shifted one position to the left. In
│ down mode, the letters are shifted one position up.
│
{Home} │ Repositions the cursor in the first puzzle box of the current
{key} │ word.
│
{End} │ Repositions the cursor in the last puzzle box of the current
{key} │ word.
│
{Page Up} │ Repositions the cursor to the first puzzle box of the NEXT
{key} │ word to the right. If the current word is located on the
│ rightmost boundry of the puzzle, the cursor wraps around to
│ the first word in the next row on the leftmost side of the
│ puzzle.
│
{Page Down} │ Repositions the cursor to the first puzzle box of the
{key} │ PREVIOUS word to the left. If the current word is located on
│ the rightmost boundry of the puzzle, the cursor wraps around
│ to the word in the previous row on the leftmost side of the
│ puzzle.
│
{Copying} │ To save hard disk space we recommend that COMPUZZLE be left
{COMPUZZLE} │ on the distribution diskette. If hard disk space is not an
{files to} │ issue and you want to copy the game to hard disk, please be
{hard disk} │ aware of the following consideration:
│
│{************************************************************
│ *** The Shareware Edition of COMPUZZLE MUST be in a ***
│ *** separate DOS directory or sub-directory as it will ***
│ *** not be compatible with any future versions of ***
│ *** COMPUZZLE. ***
│ ************************************************************}
│
{Space on} │ COMPUZZLE diskettes have the capacity for three to five
{COMPUZZLE} │ people (depending on puzzle formats and sizes, which vary
{diskette} │ from diskette to diskette) to save all puzzles without
│ running out of space. In the event you do run out of space,
│ there are two things you can do:
│
│ 1). Copy your COMPUZZLE diskette to a higher density
│ diskette.
│ 2). Delete old saved puzzle files from the COMPUZZLE
│ diskette. When a player saves a puzzle, COMPUZZLE updates
│ a separate file for each player. The file name extension
│ name extension contains the players three initials. For
│ example, file name PDEMO001.DLC contains a saved puzzle
│ for player DLC.
